When disaster strikes, most flee to safety. Consuelo Alzamora chose a different path. As the 2010 earthquake devastated Haiti and foreigners evacuated, this Chilean occupational therapist remained with her young son, driven by an unwavering commitment to those who couldn’t escape their circumstances. For over thirteen years since, she has faced corruption, violence, and repeated natural disasters to keep the Foundation Tous Ensemble (FONTEN) Rehabilitation Center’s doors open to those who need it most.
With skilled hands and quiet determination, Consuelo works with a patient at FONTEN’s rehabilitation center. Each therapy session represents more than physical healing—it’s a promise that even in Haiti’s harshest realities, compassionate care persists. While the country around her struggles with instability, Consuelo creates a space where dignity and recovery are still possible, demonstrating that the most powerful form of resilience is helping others find their own strength.
Where others saw destruction, Miyamoto’s team of Haitian engineers saw possibility. Through Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, world-class engineering expertise was provided at no cost to restore the center. The team completed assessments, created structural engineering designs, and provided quality control throughout the reconstruction process, all while navigating the complexities of Haiti’s ongoing political turmoil.
Today, FONTEN’s facility is once again fully operational, including its prosthetics and orthotics shop—the only one in southern Haiti. For the estimated 6,000-8,000 earthquake amputees and many others living with disabilities on less than $1.25 per day, this reconstruction represents far more than repaired walls.
