Established in the 1920s by the Cortijo family, this iconic ferry was more than a means of transport; it was a lifeline that united the eastern region with the metropolitan area, symbolizing the resilience and unity of the Puerto Rican community in Loíza.

After ceasing operations in 1986 due to the construction of a new bridge, the spirit of El Ancón lived on in the hearts of those who cherished its legacy. In 2019, the Colectivo El Ancón was formed to breathe new life into this historic site, aiming to transform it into a vibrant community and cultural center.
