Haiti is a country that is frequently affected by natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. One way to mitigate the impact of earthquakes on communities is to build seismic resilient schools.
Alongside our Haiti Country Office, and with national and international engineers providing quality control, on-site assistance, and training, Miyamoto Relief will repair four schools in Haiti’s Sud Department, leading to structures that are in a condition that allows children to safely attend school, and more resilient to withstand future shocks.
Activity I of the project was to conduct site visits and assessments at each of the four schools.
Activity 2 includes establishing a platform for earthquake-resistant repair techniques, train skilled laborers on locally available, low-cost, rapid “build-back-safer” repair techniques based on the Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Communication (MTPTC) documentation utilizing regionally available materials and local labor.
Lastly, Activity 3 will be to engage local and regional contractors to implement
the repairs to the four schools in the Sud department; and supervise the construction works to meet international standards of care.
By investing in seismic resilient schools, we can help build a better future for Haiti and its people.
